Unity Clinic

Unity Clinic is a student‑led, interprofessional practice environment at the University of Oklahoma Health Campus (OUHC) that brings learners, faculty, clinicians, and communities together to deliver team‑based care while preparing the next generation of collaborative health professionals.

Unity Clinic is not a single location. It is the name our students chose to represent their shared work—providing care with the community, for the community, and in the community.

Unity Clinic as an IPE Practice Environment

Unity Clinic serves as a practice‑embedded interprofessional education (IPE) environment, where learning occurs through direct patient care, reflection, and collaboration across professions. Unity Clinic’s missions is to promote clinical interdisciplinary/interprofessional collaboration between current and future health care providers while delivering patient-centered, high-quality health care to under-served populations of Oklahoma.

Learners engage in authentic clinical experiences that align with national interprofessional competencies while addressing real health needs in Oklahoma communities. Unity Clinic intentionally integrates education and service, allowing students to apply classroom learning in settings that reflect the complexity, constraints, and rewards of team‑based care.

The clinic has received national recognition for its innovative, community‑based, student‑led model and its contributions to interprofessional practice and education.

Interprofessional Team Structure

Unity Clinic is purposefully structured to reflect how modern health care teams function.

Each clinic session brings together students from multiple professions, supported by licensed clinicians, faculty supervisors, and operational staff. Team composition is flexible and responsive to:

  • Patient needs
  • Community context
  • Scope of practice considerations
  • Learner level and readiness

This structure allows students to understand their own professional role while learning how other disciplines contribute to shared decision‑making, care planning, and patient outcomes.

Student Preparation & Supervision

Participation in Unity Clinic requires intentional preparation and structured supervision.

Before engaging in clinical activities, students complete required preparatory training, which may include:

  • Team‑based care fundamentals
  • Patient communication and sensitivity training
  • Health information privacy requirements
  • Site‑specific orientation and expectations

During clinic activities, students are supported by licensed clinicians and faculty supervisors who guide clinical decision‑making, ensure patient safety, and facilitate reflective learning. This layered supervision model balances learner autonomy with appropriate oversight, reinforcing professionalism and accountability.

Community Impact

Community partnership is central to Unity Clinic’s mission.

Unity Clinic works with trusted community organizations and care sites to expand access to services, particularly for individuals and populations facing barriers to care. By meeting people where they are—geographically and socially—the clinic reduces obstacles related to transportation, time, and access.

Through ongoing partnerships, Unity Clinic contributes to:

  • Increased access to team‑based primary and specialty care
  • Health education and wellness support
  • Community outreach initiatives addressing underserved populations

These partnerships ensure that services are responsive, sustainable, and aligned with community‑identified priorities.
